The window setup that works almost everywhere
Stand two to four feet from a north-facing or shaded window (or any bright window with a sheer curtain). Face the glass so light wraps across both cheeks. Turn slightly if one side falls off, but keep both eyes lit. Overcast days are ideal; harsh noon sun through bare glass creates hotspots — diffuse with a curtain or step back.
When you only have lamps
Place one lamp in front of you at face height, slightly off-center, and bounce it off a white wall if the bulb is harsh. A second weaker lamp or a phone flashlight bounced off the ceiling can fill shadows under the chin. Avoid colored smart bulbs — green or magenta casts make skin look sick after restyling. Pure white or daylight bulbs win.
Background and distance
Stand a few feet from the wall so the background softens. Plain walls, doors, or a tidy bookshelf beat busy kitchens. Quick quality check before you generate
Look at the selfie on your phone: can you see catchlights in both eyes? Are there deep shadows under the nose or eye sockets? Is one cheek dramatically darker? If yes, adjust light or angle before spending credits. Good lighting is the cheapest upgrade in the whole pipeline — it improves every style you try afterward.
