How to Update Your LinkedIn Photo (Without Looking Fake)

An outdated LinkedIn photo quietly taxes every intro call. People meet you and feel a mismatch. Updating should feel like a clean haircut, not a rebrand. Here is a low-drama process that stays authentic.

When it is time

Update when your hair, glasses, weight, or facial hair changed enough that colleagues would notice; when you changed industries; or when the photo is older than about 18 months. Also update after a promotion wave if your current photo still says “intern energy.” Do not update weekly — that looks restless.

Stay recognizable

Keep your real face shape, skin tone, and defining features. Avoid fantasy styles, dramatic age changes, or beauty filters that erase pores into plastic. Identity-preserving AI is fine; face-swapping into a different person is not. If a close friend would not recognize you in the circle crop, regenerate with a milder style.

Upload and verify

Generate two or three options in HeadshotCam, pick the one that matches your industry, download full resolution, and upload on LinkedIn. Check the circle crop on mobile. Update your banner only if it clashes; a calm banner with a strong photo beats both fighting for attention. Mention nothing in a post unless you want engagement — most refreshes need no announcement.

Keep the rest of your presence aligned

Reuse the same family of images on your company site, email signature, and conference apps when possible. Mismatched photos across surfaces create the same trust tax as an outdated LinkedIn image. Store the master file somewhere you can find it next year.
